Wear Your HELMET!

Posted in Ramblings with tags , , , , , , on November 10, 2008 by Raven

I grew up riding horses…without a helmet. Back in the old days, it was a large western hat to help keep the sun out of my eyes. As I grew older, that hat gave way to old baseball caps, they were great…cuz I could tuck my pony tail into the hole in the back of the cap.

Then…my horse Wizard started being hard to handle and we had a few spills. I got scared and got a riding helmet. That was maybe seven years ago.

Now…I do NOT ride Huginn without my riding helmet! In fact I even wear my riding helmet during my mini’s driving lessons.

Sure…they are hot, itchy, big and your hair looks like crap when you take the helmet off, but WHO CARES!

Sure…there is no guarantee that wearing a riding helmet will save your head or your life for that matter.

BUT….WHY TAKE THE CHANCE?? WHY….ASSUME THE RISKS?
It seems that every few months I read or hear about a horse accident with a rider ending up with head injuries, that could have been prevented by wearing a riding helmet.

Helmets are a farily cheap way to insure that your noggin is somewhat protected. Wouldn’t you agree that $50.00 – $100.00 is cheap?

Troxel has a excellent tool on their website to help you figure out which one of their helmets is best for your needs.

Check out the Troxel Helmet Advisor to see which helmet is best for you. They even have a “cowboy hat” looking helmet!

Just in case you are still thinking that helmets are not for you. Then wear one for those you love.

Below is an email that hit my inbox this morning. I gotto tell you, it left me in tears. My heart goes out to the family and friends of the woman that died over the weekend.

Read it and make you own decision on if a helmet is “right for you“.

Posted with permission and rider’s name was removed upon request. Replaced with XXXX

Dear RAA Riders, fellow club members and friends,

I am writing this letter to each of you tonight after having witnessed a horrible accident this past weekend. It happened in New York – a weekend “get away” with family reunion and wedding we were attending, but the best thing was we were meeting with friends I’ve made over the years back where I was raised as a kid. I couldn’t wait. We all met at Mendon Ponds, a beautiful park I’m sure, to ride together. We never got to ride. A series of calamities happened that will forever change our lives and snuffed the life of one of our riders. She never got to go home to her son.

One of the horses had a bad time in one of the trailers, so a couple of the other horses were spooked. One of the riders, XXXX got on her horse to try to settle it down and ride it down a bit before we rode off. She was not wearing a helmet. Another horse, the same one who had problems in the trailer, bucked his rider off and in doing so the saddle slipped, sending the horse flying around the parked vehicles, close to a road and eventually, as the saddle was still hanging under its belly, the horse took off for parts unknown (later he was caught and has some lacerations, but otherwise survived). XXXX did not. Somehow, her head was smashed against a low limb on a tree, the next thing we knew, she was lying on the ground. What we thought was her breathing was actually her blood pumping out of her body as her brain was no longer functioning to tell the rest of the body to shut down. We didn’t know all that and of course did everything we could, thinking she was still alive. Part of her brain were on the front of her along with a lot of blood.

Why am I sending you this message? Because those of us who were her friends, who were there are still in mourning with this tragedy. Could it have been avoided – we don’t know. But what we do know is that a helmet would at least have protected her head and multiple head injury was listed as the cause of death. So, the next time you think that wearing a helmet is not cool or for sissies – try to stop being so selfish about your beauty and think about what an accident like this does to everyone else around you. Thank God she died, as there wasn’t much brain left on her left side. Does this sound gruesome? I hope so, because as I’m writing this, I’m crying so hard I can’t read what I’m writing. Please, wear a helmet when you ride. The image of XXXX lying on the ground with bits of her brain splattered around in a pool of blood is am image that will be with me for years. Please, put on your helmets – think of those who will find you, those you leave behind, your friends and relatives. They care – and maybe you are doing what you want to do, but there are those of us left who need to try to go on with our lives who will forever be left with a bloody, gruesome scene that will never go away.

PLEASE – WEAR A HELMET.

PS….also please use a breastcollar on your horse! Folks, there are all safety items that serve a very useful purpose!!

Bright Blessings and Reiki sent to all involved in this horrible accident. {{{HUGS}}}

Australia, an Epic Film

A film of epic proportions with horses, romance, Huge Jackman and Nicole Kidman.

australia1

I LOVE going to the movie theater. And most of all…I LOVE epic films.

I’ve been hearing the “Australia” buzz for a few months now and for the last few weeks have been totally mesmerized by the film’s trailer. I find myself holding my breath while sitting at the edge of my seat. I can not wait for the release date…November 26th!

I must admit I am not really a Oprah fan, but I had to rush through my gym workout to get home in time to watch the last half hour of today’s show.

australia7jpg1

Nicole Kidman and Huge Jackman were Oprah’s guests. Oprah treated her audience to the film, what lucky ducks!

The film is set in the Australian Outback, just before the WWII and the bombing of Darwin by the Japanese . The adventure starts when Lady Sarah inherits a huge cattle ranch located in the “Australian Outback“.

australia41

Lady Sarah must rely on “Mr. Drover” (as in livestock drover) who is played by Huge Jackman (my heart….sighs) to help her drive her 2,000 cattle across the cruel Australian countryside. Along the way they encounter Bushmen.

Is this a beautiful photo or what?!

australia31

12 yrs old Brandon Walter plays a cute Aboriginal Boy.

australia6jpg2

This is Brandon’s first film, and from what I have seen in the trailers…he’s a natural at acting.

Did I mention that there are HORSES in this film!

Yea…baby!

I VOTED!! How ’bout You?

Posted in WOW DAY! with tags , , , , , , , , , on November 5, 2008 by Raven

Got home from work with a HUGE migraine, but I was determined to get my vote out!

So, I tacked up my Icelandic Horse Huginn, and I rode him to KinnicKinnic Township Hall to cast my vote for Barack Obama.

My hubby Dan joined us on his bike.

We had a great ride to the township hall. It’s about a 5 mile round trip ride. The weather was almost perfect; it was warm, cloudy and windy. Perfect for Huginn!

Along the way, we bumped into a woman from Germany who was out for a walk. She’s one of our new neighbors that we hadn’t met yet. She got a giggle out of the fact that I was riding Huginn to the polls and Dan was biking with us. Only in America…she said.

Then we ran into a truck driver who was parked along side the field of corn, he was waiting for the farmer in the huge beautiful John Deere combine who was hard at work bringing in the corn harvest. The truck driver waved and gave us a “thumbs up”. The farmer was harvesting the corn field …. behind my hay field.

Click HERE to see a John Deer Combine harvesting corn video. Petty cool…huh?

Once at the township hall, we were greeted with smiles and giggles, as folks walked from their cars into the hall to cast their votes.

A few walked over to ask if I had ridden the pony to vote, few asked about his breed and a few took his photo.

As I walked in to vote, I was proud to be an American and take part of this privilege called voting.

After casting my vote, I walked out and was asked by one of the Vote Observers if the pony tied under the tree was mine. I was proud to say, yes he was.

He asked me why I decided to ride my pony down, I explained to him that I was conserving fuel and that I also wanted to ride my pony Huginn, on this historical day. I wanted Huginn to be part of my memories for this day.

On the way home, we passed lots of drivers heading to the polls, many of them ….smiled and waved.

About a mile from home, we passed a old rattling Ford truck driven by a gentleman and the front seat filled with …I presume his grandkids. As he slowed down, all the kids scooted forward and lean across the man to peek out the driver’s window at the cute pony on the road. That truck was filled with sunshine smiles and little kid’s giggles. They all waved at us….as they slowly passed us.

This day is indeed filled with memories. This day is indeed a day that history was made for our country.

I’m proud to be an American! And I am proud of my All American Ice Pony, Huginn!

What memories were made for you today?

My old Troxel saved my head, during a horse spill. I ended up with a hairline fracture on my forehead and a huge concussion. Headache and puking for a few days….but I was alive.

I have three riding helmets; two Troxels (black one and purple one) and one Tipperary.

Sure…helmets are hot, itchy, big and your hair looks like crap when you take the helmet off, but WHO CARES!

Happy Halloweeny !!!

Merry Meet!

So…just what is Samhain? Do you know that is one of the oldest “end of the harvest celebration”.

Samhaim is the “End of the Summer”, the final harvest and one of the “spirit nights”. A magical time when the Thin Veil between the worlds is lifted. Many Pagans believe this is a time when they can get in touch with their ancestors and loved one who has passed. It’s a time to honor the Dark Mother (Goddess, Crone) and the Dark Father (Horned Hunter, Lord of Death).

Many, many moons ago Pagans used this time to store items that would get them through the long cold winter months. Livestock was slaughtered, crops were brought in off the fields, apples, pumpkins, gourds, turnips, nuts were gathered and stored.

For Wiccans and Good Witches, Samhain is the New Year. A time to reflect, let go and look to the future.

This is also the night that the Wee Ones ….would come out to play their mischievous tricks.

trick or treat fairies Pictures, Images and Photos

They would go from house to house, and if treats were not offered ….they would play tricks on the folks living in that house. Villagers would leave little food offerings such as sweets, milk, and fruit for the Wee Ones. The Wee Ones would accept these “treats” and would bless the home for the coming year.

During the night, villagers would walk about carrying carved turnips filled with lite candles ….to light their way.  The lanterns were called “Jack-o-Lantern”.

Pumpkins Pictures, Images and Photos

Today, Halloween is mostly for the young and young-at-heart. Kids of all ages dress up and go from home-to-home “Trick O’ Treating“.

Even dogs …get to dress up! Here’s my girls!

This is my beagle, Molly Macaroni

This is my Aussie Kelpie, Lucy Bear.

Course…they’re not too trilled with Mama for making them wear silly costumes.

Even cows get into the Halloween act. She’s wearing a mask!

BTW…why does the local Arctic Cat dealer have a huge fiberglass cow!?

Here’s two teachers I work with, Mr Q and Posie.

BOO!   The scary part is that Mr. Q is NOT wearing a costume!
Hey, Quick…ya know we all dig ya!

Here’s mine, not too creative, but I got my message across.

A friend gave me the t-shirt, it’s huge on me and the hat is too damm cute! It’s a little witch, broom and all. You can see her little feet on the side of the hat. Too damm cute!

Here’s one of Posie and me. Is Posie cute or WHAT?!

Do you dress up today?  Did you have FUN!?   Did you get any tricks? Or just treats?

Wishing you a Happy Halloweeny!

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

Posted in Horse Trips with tags , , , , , , , , on October 21, 2008 by Raven

Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is located in north western Minnesota. About a three hour drive from my place, I got up to the park about noon on Thursday.

Mille Lacs Kathio is 10,500 acres of natural beauty! The Rum River dips in and out of this park, magnificent Lake Mille Lacs is across the road. You will find four other lakes within the park; Ogechie, Shakopee, Tamarak and Black Brass. This park has 22 miles of beautiful horse trails.

The trails are dirt and grass with rocks here and there. Great for a barefootin’ horse!

Friday night my hubby came up for a few days, what a nice treat! Dan really does not like to camp, so I appreciate it when he joins me for a day or two. Saturday morning Dan biked around the state park. Later that day, Steve joined Dan for a drive around Lake Mille Lacs, I think it’s almost 90 miles all the way around the lake. Lake Mille Lacs is HUGE…207 square miles… 132,500 acres!

I rode Huginn for about an hour on Thursday (with a lady I met up there), but then had to return to camp, as he was off. Poor ponykins. <;o[ It was a very slight “off”. He loves to paws and being a slightly off did not prevent him from pawing a huge hole to China. HA!

Dixie as always, was a sweet girl and a good camper. On Thursday, I ponied her with Huginn. Dixie loves to trail ride!

On Friday, I rode my friend Dawn’s beautiful TWH gelding, Tucker. Tucker is my old walking horse, who I sold a few years ago. I had a wonderful ride on Tucker, he is such a awesome horse. I forgot how tall he is compared to short Huginn. Tucker is 16.2 and Huginn is 13.2. HAHA! Here’s an old photo of Tucker.

Saturday morning Tara (massage therapist) worked on Huginn’s shoulder and wow…he was sound again!! TARA…..THANKS A BUNCH!!!!! You’re the sweetest. >;p]

I rode Huginn that day. Boy…I could tell he was feeling better, he gave me some “bucks & farts” up a few rolling hills. HA! I was so happy to have Huginn under saddle again. I’m not sure what caused him to be a bit stiff the day before. I’ll have to keep an eye on that. Tara was so sweet to take time out of her day to work on Huginn. it was also cool chatting “barefootin” with Tara and her girl pals.

On Saturday, we hiked to the park’s fire tower. I wanted to climb this tower for two reasons;test my legs/lungs and to help conquer one of my fears. A fear of falling. The steel fire tower is 100 feet tall, about 133 or so wooden steps to climb. It’s not for the fainthearted. I have a great fear of falling, but I was determined to climb to the top.

Thanks for the moral support from my hubby Dan, and my good friend Pat, I climbed the tower to the top!

Boy, I had butterflies….queasy tummy all the way up & down. And to make the climb harder, it was very WINDY!! And even worse at the top of tower. And cold! It was so worth the climb, the panoramic view (from what I remember) was spectacular. You can see all the way to the other side of Lake Mille Lacs, 22 miles away. The trees were a beautiful patchwork of golds, bright sunny yellows, honey amber, velvet browns, and orange. I was so glad that I have been running/working out …my legs did not fail me as I climbed. This made me very happy! Last year I would have been just dead from the exertion. All the way up…folks have left graffiti messages on the steps …I read a few, but I just didn’t have the nerve to look down to read more of them. It’s a must do on the next trip there.

Saturday nite our group headed to the local casino for the yummy buffet. On the way out…while waiting for those who needed to use the potty, I dropped a $1.00 into the slot machine and won 22 cents! HA! What a gambler I am..huh? NOT. After dinner, we returned to camp for the campfire.

It was a great weekend spent with wonderful freinds. For more photos, please visit my Picasa photo web site.

Super Duper Weekend

Posted in Horse Trips with tags , , , , , , , , on September 29, 2008 by Raven

Just boppin’ in to say that I had a super duper weekend. I rode with my Orchard Ranger Saddle Club friends at Hay Creek State Forest.  Hadn’t seen them for a few months, it’s was good to get caught up.  I pulled into camp early Friday morning; the day was sunny and warm.  Set up camp, had some lunch..then got my butt into the saddle and hit the trails.

As always, the trails were beautiful…many of them covered in crunchy leaves.

It got a bit humid towards the end of the ride…glad I clipped Huginn last Sunday.  After the ride, he got a bath in Hay Creek.

Before our ride…my hubby Dan showed up. I had forgotten my RV’s shower curtain (was in the wash/dryer) at home and he dropped it off.  What a nice guy!   He knows I like to shower before tucking in for the nite.

Too bad…Dan didn’t spend the nite! HA!

Saturday…Susie made a yummy breakfast for all of us. Then we hit the trail, the day was cooler. I was glad, since Huginn is getting so darn fuzzy. My pals all ride non gaited horses, so Huginn had a easy weekend of leisure riding.  Huginn is so darn cute…when he rides with QH…he’s so slow, he’s always one of the last ones.

On the way back to camp, we ran into a group of PNH riders with their carrot sticks.  Huginn and I rode with them for about 30 minutes.  It was nice chitchatting PNH with these ladies.  Too bad we were not in the same campground, it would have been fun to take my ponies and carrot stick over to their sites for some “playing”.

After the ride…Huginn got another creek bath. Hehehe…my friend Sally had a watermelon chilling in the creek, Huginn spied that and wanted to eat it.

Later in the day, we cut the melon open.  What a surprise…it was bright yellow and very sweet.  After all the humans had a slice, Sally gave Huginn the rest of it. Oh boy…he LOVES watermelon.  Thank you Sally!

Saturday nite we drove into town to celebrate Sheri’s birthday at Mexican Fiesta. YUMMY FOOD!  The best part was that Dan joined us for dinner and then came back to camp for the bonfire.

Nope…he didn’t spend the nite. DARN!  Dan does not like to camp.. even in the RV. HA!

Sunday morning, I rode alone and ponied my mini mare Dixie. She loves to trail ride.  But sometimes other horses on the trail…do not appreciate seeing her.

What is it about a pony and a mini on the trail…spooking big horses?

Look at these faces….are they scary???  HAHA!

BTW….I thought I knew these trails like the back of my hand. Well, I got to ride some of the deer trails, they were so much fun and just a tad challenging in spots.  YAHOO!   My favorite kind of trail.

I’m bumming…cuz I forgot my camera and Flip video at home.  Darn!  So, you get to see an old Hay Creek photo.

This is beloved Wizard.  He was my heart and soul.  I miss him very much.

Where to Go? Where to Go?!

Ya know…sometimes there are way too many options!

Take this weekend, I plan on horse camping and trail riding. But I have way too many options, as I have friends going in every direction to horse camp/trail ride.

  1. Wildcat State Park – WI
  2. Tamerack State Forest – MN
  3. Zumbro Bottoms – MN
  4. Triple HHH Trail Ride
  5. Forestville State Park – MN
  6. Govenor Knowles State Forset – WI

I want to go to each of these rides…but I can only choose one.

I decided to go to Tamerack. I have been wanting to ride these trails for many…many years. There have been a few different reasons, that I have never made it up there. Too buggy most of the season, way too many bees (I’m allergic) and trails too challenging to go without someone who DOES KNOW the trails.  Who likes getting LOST?

Last year I was all set to make the 3+ hour drive up to Tamerack with my saddle club. At the last mintue the ride was cancel due to high temps, too buggy and way too many bees. Darn. HA!

So, you can see that this year I was once again…soooo looking forward to going up to Tamerack with my friends.

But…today, I got an email that our ride location has been changed to Hay Creek State Forest. As it’s too buggy and there are way too many bees at Tamerack. HAHA! I’ll get up there…one year.

It’s not a big deal…I do so LOVE riding at Hay Creek Forest Management Area, the trails are beautiful. And spending time with my great friends is what really matters!

Have an awesome weekend!

Autumn…..a time when Mother Earth takes her paint brush and gets busy!

About a week ago, while fixin’ breakfast, I looked out my kitchen window and saw the first autumn leaves.

They are beautiful.

Autumn is my favorite season!

What I love autumn:

The beautiful colors…a kaleidoscopic of red, orange, bronze, brown, yellow and all the shades of green.

The scents.

The chilly mornings and sunny afternoons.

Pumpkins out on the porch.

Pulling sweaters and hoodies on. Wearing jams to bed.

Ponies getting fuzzy.

Hay rides, hot cider, bon fires and roasted marshmallows.

Birds loading up on bright berries to fatten up for winter and the trip down south.

Squirrels acorn hunting.

Harvest Moon.

Crickets chirping at night.

Finding the season’s first fuzzy caterpillar.

Apples….sweet yummy crispy apples!

CORN MAZES!

Cooking soup.

Geese flying south.

Indian Summer!

My most favorite thing about autumn is riding Huginn through the crispy …crunchy leaves!

Why do leaves change color?

What is your favorite part of autumn?

Go rake some leaves!
